Purpose of the Role

To be the associate IHC team lead reporting to the Director of IHC, overseeing as required and bringing deep knowledge and experience to the team.

Job Description

We are seeking a motivated, communicative, and detail-oriented Senior or Principal Scientist to join our histopathology lab within the Target Validation Team at our San Jose, CA site. The candidate will report to the Director of IHC and be expected to independently execute histopathology techniques for evaluating tumor and immune cell therapeutic targets, supervise RAs, and coordinate data presentation internally and externally.

This role will support target validation and molecule assessment in our pipeline using immunohistochemistry (IHC), immunofluorescence (IF), in situ hybridization (ISH), microscopy, and digital imaging and analysis. Responsibilities include developing, screening, and validating IHC antibodies, tissue procurement, sample processing, sectioning, and assay development (manual and automated). Knowledge of histology and oncology fundamentals is essential; cell culture and molecular biology experience are desirable.

Training, supervising, and presenting to external parties are key elements of this role.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, execute, and oversee histopathology procedures including tissue processing, H&E, IHC, ISH, and immunofluorescence staining.
  • Use tissue-based assays for patient stratification, prevalence, and expression analysis in normal vs diseased tissues.
  • Supervise, mentor, and train less experienced employees.
  • Interpret and present data internally and externally on research programs.
  • Coordinate with stakeholders on program development and business presentations.
  • Plan research activities with input from the IHC Director and stakeholders.
  • Develop expertise in target proteins and their expression profiles, especially in oncology.
  • Execute tissue experiments, including antibody validation in preclinical models.
  • Evaluate new technologies like digital image analysis and deep learning.
  • Oversee data analysis and project delivery from CROs.
  • Collaborate in a matrixed organization to advance projects into clinical development.
  • Act as a technical expert and guide internal teams.

Knowledge, Experience, and Skills:

Essential

  • PhD with >5 years in histology or Bachelor/Master with >10 years industry experience. MD candidates may also be considered.
  • Extensive experience in histology, tissue preparation, sectioning, IHC, ISH, and microscopy.
  • Experience with chromogenic and fluorescent staining on various samples.
  • Knowledge of antibody discovery and testing for IHC.
  • Expertise with microscopy, digital pathology, and image analysis platforms.
  • Strong data presentation skills for diverse audiences.
  • Experience in project planning, prioritization, and fast-paced environments.
  • Ability to train, mentor, and develop others.
  • Experience working with service providers and CROs.
  • Knowledge of tumor pathology, cancer biology, and immuno-oncology.

Desirable

  • Experience in CDx development.
  • Tissue culture experience.
