Mercer Engineering Research Center (MERC), a research institute of Mercer University, provides high quality engineering, scientific, and technical support services to both government and private industry customers. The Fabrication Technician is responsible for designing and collaborating on detailed engineering efforts, maintaining technical interface with customers, diagnosing needs and opportunities, and preparing engineering architectures and design fabrication. Responsibilities include reading and interpreting technical data packages; recognizing, setting up, and operating hand and power tools common to the welding trade such as shielded metal arc and gas metal arc welding equipment; monitoring fitting, burning, and welding processes to avoid overheating or warping; laying out, positioning, aligning, and securing parts and assemblies to meet technical data package requirements; knowledge of safety standards and use of protective equipment; performing tasks with attention to detail; measuring and cutting materials to specifications; checking finished work for tolerance; maintaining equipment and a clean work area; and excellent communication skills. Required qualifications include U.S. Citizenship, ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Security Clearance, welding experience and AWS certification or ability to gain it, high school diploma or GED with 10 years of related experience, ability to stand for long periods, preferred certified forklift operator, compliance with quality and safety standards, ability to complete work on time and under budget, proficiency with precision measuring instruments, problem-solving skills, multitasking ability, and maintaining tolerance and finishes to specifications.
