ABOUT INTERNATIONAL EXAMINER

The International Examiner is the Pacific Northwests only nonprofit ANHPIA (Asian Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander American) media source, proudly serving the community since 1974 . Located in the heart of Seattles historic Chinatown-International District, our mission is to promote critical thinking, dialogue, and action by providing accurate and culturally revitalizing ANHPIA coverage. For over 52 years , we have produced a monthly newspaper and maintain a vibrant online presence, delivering news, features, and stories with a hyper-local focus on independent community journalism and in-depth storytelling.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Editor-in-Chief oversees the organizational implementation of the IE Boards vision and mission with approved goals and objectives. They lead the organizational, community-related and business decisions to drive IE mission-focused sustainability and growth in collaboration with staff, stakeholders and partners. They set and uphold a positive, culturally competent organizational culture that ensures sound journalism practices, integrity, and ethics. They create a positive, productive, transparent, communicative, and equitable work environment through responsible and effective staff management. They will play a significant role in fundraising, development, and publicly raising the visibility of the publication to contribute to long-term sustainability.

The position is a hybrid position, with a mixture of in-person and remote work. A percentage of time working out of the positions office in Seattles Chinatown-International District office is expected, especially as it pertains to production days leading up to the printed publication every month.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Editorial & Newsroom Leadership:40%

  • Develop and implement the editorial vision and strategy for the publication, ensuring alignment with organizational mission and goals.
  • Collaborate with the Managing Editor to guide and mentor the editorial team, which includes writers, editors, and freelancers, while promoting a collaborative and creative work environment.
  • Co-lead weekly editorial meetings with the Managing Editor.
  • Review and approve all content before print and web publication, ensuring adherence to quality standards, style guidelines, and ethical and legal considerations.
  • Develop and oversee programs related to the IEs mission, including print newspaper, website, and future initiatives.
  • Work closely with other team members, such as in sales and development, to ensure cohesive messaging and effective promotion of content through newsletter, social media, and other communication channels.
  • Track reader feedback and engagement metrics to refine content strategy and improve reader satisfaction.
  • Stay informed about industry trends, emerging topics, and audience preferences to keep the publication relevant and competitive.

Executive Leadership: 40%

  • Collaborate with the board of directors and staff to set strategic goals and objectives for the organization, including regular attendance at executive committee and board meetings.
  • Develop a cross-culturally competent, effective, and efficient organizational culture that values transparency and collaboration.
  • Recruit, train, supervise, and motivate full-time staff managers while providing clear direction and regular feedback for accountability.
  • Lead the development and management of an annual organizational budget of approximately $500,000, ensuring proper resource allocation for freelance contributions, production costs, and operational assets.
  • Work with the Business Development and Operations Manager to ensure effective administration of operational needs, including insurance, staff benefits, facilities, equipment, and HR, while developing and implementing new policies and procedures for stable operations as needed.
  • Work with Development Manager on fundraising, including grants, donor relations, new funding opportunities, and IEs annual Community Voices Awards dinner.
  • Develop strategic partnerships with stakeholders, funders, publications, community organizations, and supporters to enhance community awareness and collaborations.
  • Represent the organization at public events, including conferences, forums, and community events.
  • Ensure the legal, financial, and program integrity of the IE. Identify opportunities and risks, recommend strategies, and implement board-approved actions.
